Willow J (aka Mechante Chatte) – Bottoms Up Burlesque

Your browser may not support display of this image.
In 1999 when Willow was studying acting she was cast in the Aristophanes play Lysistrata and little did she know that she was partaking in great Burlesque history! This was the very first play written that portrayed women using this style of sexy and satirical art form which has come to be known as Burlesque. She than went on to complete her Advanced Diploma in Acting and graduated from the Centre for the Performing Arts (Adelaide) in 2001.
The following year her passion for acting, dancing and performing brought her to Victoria where she made her Melbourne performance debut at the Carlton Courthouse in the tango inspired production of
The Stitch. Since then Willow has had many different roles in television, film and theatre and has continued to study and practise different art forms including Butoh, Suzuki, Grotowski, Tango and yoga.
Willow’s desire to explore her femininity, be risqué, daring, bawdy and over the top lead her to a life of Burlesque where she can express her view of the world in a comical and entertaining fashion. She is a co-founder of the notorious Neo Burlesque Troupe Voodoo Trash Dolls where she created her sweet little French character Mechante Chatte (Malicious Pussy) and became famous for her wild washing machine antics – and other such mishaps!
Willow believes there is a bit of burlesque in everyone and enjoys teaching people how to dance, act and behave in the manner appropriate to that of bawdy, sexy, and sensual fun! Willow still continues to whip audiences into frenzies throughout Australia and loves to encourage her students to learn the skills to do the same!
Voltera
‘SAVE THE EARTH, KILL YOUR SELF’
Voltera are a multi-faceted four piece currently residing in Melbourne, Australia. Established in the underground, Voltera is a sophisticated, emotive and distinct manipulator of the darker genres, drawing on their collective musical influences to create an eclectic twist on metal and industrial sounds, within an accurate environmental backdrop.
In an industry dominated by men, the cliché is abandoned with instigator Jess assembling Voltera's diverse talent into a defiant armada against capitalist indulgence. A graduate from the vocally unconventional, Jess' vocal range is rampant and unique, extending from dark and melodic to an ardent guttural bawl, thus delivering a captivating live performance immersed in the avant-garde.
Recently Voltera have maintained a strong live presence with prolific touring over the east coast of Australia and a solid schedule of shows to see out 2008 and another Australian tour scheduled for early 2009. In the past, Voltera has ventured to the USA to play the West Coast leg of the 2006 Vans Warped Tour, followed by shows in Phoenix and Portland. In addition, Voltera have been the support for international acts such as KMFDM, Genitorturers, The Birthday Massacre and Covenant, as well as headlining many of their own successful shows all over Australia.
Voltera have two tracks featured on popular console games, "It beats for you" on Tony Hawk's Proving Ground and "Do What Your Daddy Say" on Tony Hawk's Project 8. With aggressive political intention, Voltera focus much of their artistic energy towards overpopulation, the environment and organized religion. This is evident both lyrically and within the social activities of the band members and their dedicated national and international street team. A very relevant and artistically committed band, Voltera are responsible for the creation of all their own media, including the renowned website www.voltera.net. It becomes hard to classify something that constantly changes form, with the only formula being purpose.
